Within our program, students advance towards aPh.D. in Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology. Pharmacology is oftenconfused with pharmacy but the two fields differ greatly.Pharmacy, a separate profession, is responsible for thepreparation, allocation, and the appropriate use of medication.Pharmacology however, is the science of drug actions on biologicalsystems. It involves knowledge of the chemical properties,biological effects and therapeutic uses of drugs. Examples ofpharmacological studies include the exploration of cellularmechanistic effects by chemical agents, and the development ofpreventive measures and treatments for diseases. The field ofpharmacology integrates knowledge from many scientific disciplinesin order to develop new drugs and discover new therapies.

Message to Pharmacology’s GraduateStudents
From Dr. Michael Frohman
I want to extend my warmest welcome to potentialapplicants to our program, to the new incoming students, and to ourcurrent graduate student body. I am sure that all the new studentsare feeling somewhat apprehensive about entering thepharmacological sciences graduate program. Your selection into thisprogram already demonstrates that we have strong confidence thatyou will be highly successful in all your efforts. Let me assureyou that the faculty, students and staff will do their utmost tomake your graduate education a very rewarding yet challengingexperience.
You should also be aware that you embarked on your careers at aunique turning point in the biological sciences. Never before hasthere been such an explosive period of discovery and understandingof mammalian pharmacology, particularly in the areas of molecularmechanisms and therapeutic interventions. At this state of yourcareers, you are in perfect position to take advantage of these newadvances in biomolecular and chemical biological technologies. Ifyou apply yourself and remain focused on both didactic and wetbench laboratory skills that you will learn, your future in sciencewill be limitless. This is a great time to be a graduate studentand I hope that you will take advantage of the opportunities thatwill be coming your way.
